Our First Year students enjoyed an exciting, educational visit to Kerry Museum this morning. The trip brought history to life as students explored what life was like in a medieval 12th century town. Students learned about the various roles people played in the town where criminals were put in the stocks for committing petty crimes. They also learned about monks in a medieval monastery and the knights who protected the townspeople during dangerous times. They even experienced being archaeologists for a short time.It was a hands on activity in which they excavated bones, skulls and other interesting artefacts. The visit finished with a tour celebrating the remarkable achievements of the Antartic Explorer, Tom Crean from Annascaul. The exhibition told the story of Crean’s bravery and heroic exploits in extremely harsh conditions. Overall, it was a great morning of learning, discovery and fun, giving the students a deeper understanding of both local and medieval history. Kerry County Museum is to partially close next week ahead of a E10.4m revamp of The Ashe Memorial Hall and will reopen in 2028 in time for the 100 year anniversary of the building.
