Transition Year is an important and exciting part of the educational journey here at Presentation Castleisland. It offers our students the opportunity to step beyond the familiar routines of the classroom, explore new interests and develop the skills, confidence and maturity that will support them in the years ahead. It is a year of possibility: a chance to learn by doing, to discover strengths that may not yet have been recognised and to begin imagining the many career paths open to them in the future.
Transition Year (TY) is an optional, standalone programme within Senior Cycle in Irish post-primary education. It follows Junior Cycle and provides a bridge between the more structured learning of the Junior Cycle and the greater independence and subject focus of the Leaving Certificate years. While learning remains central, TY broadens the meaning of education through a varied programme that can include classroom learning, projects, practical work, workshops, work experience, visiting speakers, trips and community-based activities. This does not mean that learning takes a back seat. Rather, it creates space for students to engage with learning in different ways, tackle appropriate challenges, reflect on their progress and apply knowledge to real-life situations.
The revised Transition Year Programme Statement, published in 2024 by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) and the Department of Education, provides a framework for schools to design a programme that responds to students’ developmental and learning needs. It places emphasis on four connected student dimensions: personal growth; being a learner; civic and community engagement; and career development. Together, these dimensions recognise that young people need opportunities to grow academically, socially and personally.
One of the greatest benefits of TY is the opportunity for personal growth. New experiences can encourage students to communicate more confidently, work with people beyond their usual friendship groups, take responsibility and discover that they are capable of more than they first imagined.
Our broad TY programme makes learning tangible. Workshops, guest speakers, visits and practical activities introduce students to ideas and professions they may not otherwise encounter. They can ask questions, meet people with different experiences and connect subjects studied in school with the world around them. Career exploration is another important element which we foster through work experience, career guidance classes and launched in the 2025/2026 academic year, Careers Corner. Each month, a professional is invited into our school to share their educational journey and career experience. It is a fantastic opportunity to come face to face with a person working a career a young person is considering. Please follow our school social media to keep up to date with career visitors.
The introduction of Law Education to the TY timetable at Presentation Castleisland in September 2026 is one example of how Transition Year evolves to meet the changing needs of the student cohort. Combined with an 80-minute class period weekly, the module included a workshop facilitated by solicitor Deborah Weekes, which gave students the opportunity to take part in a mock trial, consider everyday scenarios encountered by young people and learn about the range of career opportunities linked to law. Activities such as these invite students to think critically, weigh evidence, express their views and consider the responsibilities and rights that shape life in society.
At Presentation Castleisland, Transition Year is an opportunity to place young people at the heart of their learning. It recognises that education is about more than examination results: it is also about developing capable, thoughtful, confident and compassionate people who can participate fully in society. By combining learning, practical experiences, personal development and engagement with the wider world, TY can help students approach the Leaving Certificate years with greater maturity and a stronger understanding of themselves.
Transition Year is, above all, a year of discovery. It gives students permission to explore, to ask questions, to make mistakes, to find new strengths and to grow. With the support of their teachers, families and community, students at Presentation Castleisland can use this year to build foundations that will serve them well – not only in the classroom, but in further study, work and life.
