Religion is taught at Pres by Ms. O’Connor, Ms. Broderick, Ms. O’Brien and Mr. Dargan. Religion is an exam subject at Junior Cycle and at Leaving Certificate. Pres is the only school that offers Religious Education as an exam subject to Leaving Certificate in Castleisland. All years receive 3 periods of Religion per week. Pres has an active and vibrant school ethos rooted in the mission and vision of our foundress Nano Nagle. Religious Education provides students with a holistic education, covering topics such as morality, community and also recognising and appreciating the various beliefs of the major world religions. Students engage in retreats both in school and outside, including 1st Years annual trip to Nano Nagle Place in Cork City and 5th Years engagement in the Kerry Ceiliuradh na nÓg project to name just a few. Students actively engage with feast days throughout the year, including making St. Brigid’s Day Crosses on February 1st. We are involved at a Parish level and regularly engage in events in the Parish Church next door. The Presentation Sisters, regularly visit our school and their legacy is carried on by our present teachers. Last year we had the privilege of launching Catholic Schools Week, led by Bishop Ray Browne. This year we were chosen to participate in a pilot programme for Transition Year, a modern new approach to Religious Education. Finally, Religious Education is a visible presence in our school, with our Ethos Wall in the main reception and our Oratory also in the main building. Religious Education shapes and guides our lives through a moral compass here at Pres Castleisland.
