Big Wins for the Under 16 & 19 Basketballers

Coláiste Mhuire, Ennis, were our opponents today in the first round of the South West League. Both our under 16 and under 19 teams were in action, and both matches were hard fought victories. Beginning with the under 16s, the game started off very hotly contested, with the score 24-19 at half time. However, as they did on the Friday before in Cork City, our girls pulled away in the second half. The game finished 51-29, and two wins from two for the under 16s.

However, the under 19 game proved to be a lot closer tussle and went right down to the final buzzer. We went in at half time down 24-26 and were really up against it. Coláiste Mhuire were a classy outfit and it was going to take a monumental effort to overturn them. The third quarter really showed what this group was all about, holding Ennis to just 3 points and swinging the momentum back in our favour. Leading 42-40 with just seconds on the clock, and with Ennis breaking away for a seemingly certain open basket, Hillary O’ Connor made a heroic game saving steal and helped get our under 19s off to a great start in the league. Well done to everyone, including transition year students Megan Dennehy and Jessica O’ Riordan who were the table judges on the day.
