Heaven and Heartbreak in Round 2 of the South-West League

October 17, 2022

The local derby with the Community College took place today in Castleisland. To say it was a day filled with drama and suspense would be an understatement. For the neutral onlooker it was basketball heaven, however, for those with a vested interest, it was a rollercoaster of emotions. The under 19’s started the day and our girls got off to a fantastic start, leading 12-3 at the end of the first quarter. Our neighbours clawed away at our lead however and went ahead in the third quarter. The fourth quarter was nip and tuck throughout, and with us down a basket with seconds on the clock, Emma Buckley’s shot to level the game ricocheted in and out. The real heartbreak of sport was felt by all of the team in this moment. They deserved more than that, however that is life.
The under 16’s then got under way and were determined to get revenge for the under 19’s loss. Another close game throughout, the lead swapped hands a number of times. With the Community College seemingly pulling away in the fourth quarter and leading by 8 points, our girls were going to have to pull off a near miracle to get over the line, and that they did. Having clawed the lead back to 2 with just seconds left on the clock, Charlie O’ Keefe found herself open on the 3 point line. Without hesitation she went for it…SPLASH! The buzzer went, Charlie was the hero. The comeback was complete, revenge for the under 19s near defeat was attained, and pride was restored. The phrase ‘You win some, you lose some’ was epitomised by today’s events, and the great thing is we get to go again this Wednesday versus the Gaelcholáiste Tralee.
