The name Presentation, Castleisland is synonymous with basketball. The school currently holds 27 All- Ireland titles the most recent of which was won in 2019. With this prestigious title came the invitation to attend the International Schools’ Sport Federation Basketball Championships in Zadar, Croatia, as Ireland’s representatives. This competition was to involve teams from fifteen countries around the world. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented this competition from taking place to date. Training for different teams takes place various times throughout the week during lunchtime or after school in St. Johns Hall.

Football

There is a strong tradition of ladies football in the school and our school football teams compete at First year, Junior and Senior level. We have strong links with Castleisland Desmonds club and training takes place after school in the Desmonds pitch.

Camogie

In 2019 Camogie was introduced under the stewardship of Kerry Development officer Laura Collins. Among the oldest and fastest field games in the world Camogie skills were developed and practiced during regular training sessions at Castleisland Desmonds pitch.

Karate

September 2023, saw the introduction of a new sport and after school club at our school – Karate. The club is run every Monday evening in our school sports hall. It is open to both staff and students. Presentation Castleisland is the only Secondary School in Kerry that has an official Karate Club run by the Kerry Martial Arts School. Charles and Agatha Neri from the Kerry Martial Arts School run the club each Monday, after school, from 4pm – 5pm.

Karate practice strengthens the mind, develops composure, a clearer thought process, deeper insight into one’s mental capabilities, and more self-confidence. It strengthens the entire body, improves coordination, quickens reflexes, builds stamina and overall health. It values courtesy, integrity, humility, justice, honor, and self-control. Karate can also be described as a martial art, involving a variety of techniques, including blocks, strikes, evasions, throws, and joint manipulations. Karate practice is divided into three aspects: kihon (basics), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring).

Participants in our school club received a white karate uniform with the school crest on it. All members start off on a white belt. From September to Christmas 2023, all participants practiced and covered the syllabus for the first grading belt – yellow belt.
