This poignant film was well worth the trip to Cork International Film festival for our TY and 5th year students studying French. .. the story of 2 brothers separated and adopted into different families. Thibault, raised by a wealthy Parisian family is now a famous orchestra conductor, while Jimmy grows up in a modest household in a village in the North of France, works in the local school canteen and plays in a marching band.
Dealing with social issues like unemployment, illness, family and community, the overall feeling is uplifting and there were many tears shed at the dramatic ending. Students used words like bitter-sweet, touching, fantastic, sad et magnifique to describe the story. Experiencing a language through the medium of film conveys authenticity and gives insight into culture as well as improving language skills.
