On Thursday last, our second year basketballers headed to the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght for the All Ireland Quarter Final. Our opponents were the champions of the South East Region – Presentation Thurles. Playing in the Mecca of Irish basketball did not phase this team, and we went from strength to strength throughout the game. We captured the lead early and never relinquished it. There was fantastic displays across the board in this one, including Erin O’ Connor and Amelie Kerin really taking the game by the scruff of the neck. We finished the game victorious 36-30.
With that win, we advanced to the All Ireland Semi Final just a few hours later. Calasanctius College Oranmore were waiting for us, champions of the West Region. We got off to a blistering start and held a 20-10 lead early in the second quarter. However, from this point forward our opponents gradually clawed away at our lead and ran out close winners on a 48-38 scoreline as the final buzzer blew. It brought an end to a fantastic journey for this group of players. Though we did not achieve our ultimate goal of bringing an All Ireland back to Presentation Castleisland, a bronze medal is no small feat. Considering almost 800 schools entered school basketball across the country this year, finishing with a bronze medal is a remarkable achievement for this group of players! They should be proud of themselves and have made our school proud.
